Church Hill Silver Band performing at the Sligo Fleadh 2015

Peace in the Fleadh

The Church Hill Silver Band will be participating in the Fleadh Peace Project 2015 which is funded by the International Fund for Ireland, in August. The project is called “Between the Jigs and the Marches” and its purpose is to connect a Fermanagh marching band with a Sligo band with traditional Irish music roots.

Church Hill Silver Band and Sligo Concert Band will perform together at Fleadh Cheoil in Sligo on Saturday 15th August on Quay Street Stage and O’Connell Street. They will perform a select programme together throughout the afternoon, including a march composed especially for the occasion by Mr Stephen Crooks of Letterbreen.

“The Fleadh Cheoil is Ireland’s biggest traditional music festival and can justifiably lay claim to being one of the world’s best known cultural festivals. From humble beginnings in 1951, the Fleadh has – in recent times especially – grown significantly year on year to the point where people come from all over the world to compete, take part in street and pub sessions, or just to get a snapshot of Irish culture at its best.” (http://www.fleadhcheoil.ie/fleadh-cheoil-2015-all-the-info/)

Funding Opportunity for Local Charities

gannettfoundation_s-1The Gannett Foundation is the charitable arm of Gannett Co Inc., the parent company of Newsquest Media Group, one of the UK’s largest publishers and owners of The Impartial Reporter. They provide funding to registered charities in the areas where they operate local newspapers and websites.

They support registered charities with projects taking a creative approach to fundamental issues such as neighbourhood improvements, local problem-solving, economic development, youth enterprise, assistance to disadvantaged or disabled people, care of the elderly, environmental conservation, and educational or cultural enrichment:

We value projects that bring lasting benefits to communities served by our local newspapers and websites.  While preference may be given to ideas which create a durable legacy for the community, we will consider single events or projects of limited duration that otherwise meet our criteria.

We entertain applications of any size or ambition. Typically our grants are modest sums for practical projects, but we frequently award sums of £10,000 or more to larger projects which deserve our backing. We are able to join with other contributors to support elements of larger projects, though we prefer to be in a position of making a donation which will fund a project entirely or which constitutes the final instalment to complete a project. Decisions about funding will be made by the trustees based on the evidence submitted.

Deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday, October 16, 2015.
